TOKYO FORUM COMPETITION 1989
A conference and exhibition complex on a restricted site bounded to the east by the elevated main line from Tokyo Central Station. A ‘solar portico’ runs the full length of the western boundary, shading the glass roof of a sunken linear exhibition hall acting as a ‘moat’ towards the Imperial Palace. The structural form of the opposing auditoria, seating 5,000 and 1,500, refers to the special significance of roofs in Japanese culture.
